Product Overview
N-Methylaniline (abbreviated as NMA), CAS No. 100-61-8, is a colorless to light yellow transparent oily liquid that oxidizes to a brownish-red color upon prolonged storage or exposure to light. Industrially, it is mainly produced through the gas-phase methylation of aniline with methanol under catalytic conditions, followed by distillation to separate the dimethylaniline by-product, yielding a high-purity product. This product is currently the most widely used metal-free gasoline octane improver in China, offering a significant anti-knock effect while being free of metal elements such as manganese and lead. It does not produce metallic deposits upon combustion, aligning with the development direction of clean fuels. Beyond the fuel sector, it is also an important N-alkylated aromatic amine intermediate in dye and pharmaceutical synthesis.

Product Uses
- Gasoline Anti-Knock Agent: As a metal-free, high-efficiency octane improver, an addition of just 1%–3% can significantly increase the Research Octane Number (RON), and it is widely used in gasoline blending.
- Dye Intermediate: Used in the synthesis of azo dyes, disperse dyes, and certain optical brighteners.
- Pharmaceuticals and Pesticides: Used in the synthesis of certain antibacterial drug intermediates and pesticide active ingredients.
- Organic Synthesis: Used as a raw material for producing fine chemicals such as N-methyl-N-hydroxyethylaniline, and can also be used as a raw material for rubber additives.
Packaging and Storage/Transportation
Packaging: Standard packaging in 200L galvanized iron drums, with a net weight of approximately 190 kg per drum. For large quantities, 1000L IBC tote tanks and ISO tank transportation are available; a standard 20GP container can hold 80 drums.
Storage: This is a Class 6.1 toxic substance, UN No. 2294. It must be stored in a dedicated hazardous materials warehouse that is cool, well-ventilated, and shielded from light, away from ignition sources and heat sources, with a recommended warehouse temperature below 35°C. It should be stored separately from oxidizers and strong acids. Containers should remain sealed, and nitrogen blanketing is recommended to prevent oxidation-induced discoloration affecting the color grade index.
Transportation: Must be handled as a Class 6.1 toxic substance, and transport vehicles must have the appropriate qualifications and hazardous materials markings. In summer, transportation is best conducted in the early morning or evening to avoid direct sunlight exposure; on rainy days, precautions should be taken to prevent exposure to rain. Collision and dragging must be strictly avoided during loading and unloading, and operators must wear appropriate respiratory and skin protection.
