Product Overview

Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE), CAS No. 1634-04-4, is a colorless, transparent, free-flowing liquid with a distinctive ether-like odor. Industrially, it is synthesized through an etherification process from isobutylene and methanol under the catalysis of acidic cation exchange resin, with the raw materials primarily sourced from refinery C4 fractions. MTBE has a high octane number (RON of approximately 118), moderate vapor pressure, and good miscibility with gasoline, making it one of the most widely used oxygenated gasoline blending components globally. At the same time, due to its low solubility in water, moderate boiling point, and ease of recovery, it also serves as an excellent extraction and reaction solvent in the pharmaceutical and laboratory fields. We can supply high-purity, pharmaceutical-grade product.

Product Uses

  1. Gasoline Blending: Used as a high-octane oxygenated blending component to improve gasoline’s anti-knock performance, enhance combustion performance, and reduce exhaust emissions.
  2. Pharmaceutical Intermediate: Used as a reaction and crystallization solvent in active pharmaceutical ingredient production, and also used to produce intermediates such as tert-butylamine.
  3. Extraction Solvent: Due to its low water solubility and ease of phase separation, it is widely used as a solvent for liquid-liquid extraction and chromatographic analysis, and can replace some uses of diethyl ether.
  4. Organic Synthesis: Used as a tert-butylating reagent and as a storage and transportation carrier for isobutylene, from which high-purity isobutylene can be recovered through cracking.

Packaging and Storage/Transportation

Packaging: Typically packaged in 200L galvanized iron drums (net weight approximately 150 kg per drum). Large quantities are shipped in bulk via ISO tank containers or tank trucks; pharmaceutical-grade product can be supplied in lined drums or stainless steel drums.

Storage: This is a Class 3 flammable liquid, UN No. 2398, with a flash point of approximately -28°C, making it highly flammable. It must be stored in a cool, well-ventilated Class A hazardous materials warehouse, with a warehouse temperature not exceeding 30°C, away from ignition sources and heat, with open flames and smoking strictly prohibited. Lighting and ventilation equipment in the warehouse must be explosion-proof, and pipelines and containers must be reliably grounded to prevent static electricity accumulation. It should be stored separately from oxidizers and acids.

Transportation: Must be transported in accordance with Class 3 flammable liquid regulations, and vehicles must be equipped with flame arrestors, static-electricity-discharging ground straps, and fire-fighting equipment. During loading and unloading, flow rate must be controlled to prevent static discharge and vapor accumulation; open flames and non-explosion-proof electronic devices such as mobile phones are strictly prohibited at the work site.
