Product Overview

n-Propanol (1-Propanol), CAS No. 71-23-8, is a colorless, transparent liquid with an odor similar to ethanol, miscible with water. Industrially, it is produced from ethylene as a starting material, which undergoes hydroformylation to form propionaldehyde, followed by catalytic hydrogenation to produce n-propanol. Compared to isopropanol, n-propanol is a straight-chain primary alcohol with a slightly higher boiling point (approximately 97°C), superior dissolving power and film-forming properties, and a milder odor, making it more favored in high-grade coatings, printing inks, and cosmetics applications. It is also an important upstream raw material for propionic acid, propylamine, and propionate ester products.

Product Uses

  1. Coatings and Paints: Used as a true solvent and co-solvent for nitrocellulose lacquers, amino resin paints, and water-based coatings, improving leveling and gloss.
  2. Printing Inks: Used as a solvent for flexographic and gravure printing inks, offering low odor and strong dissolving power.
  3. Adhesives: Used in the formulation of polyurethane and acrylate adhesives.
  4. Cosmetics and Personal Care: Used as a solvent and preservative aid in toners, perfumes, and disinfection products.
  5. Organic Synthesis: Used to produce propionic acid, n-propylamine, propionate esters, propionaldehyde, and fungicide intermediates.

Packaging and Storage/Transportation

Packaging: Typically packaged in 200L galvanized iron drums, with a net weight of approximately 160 kg per drum. Large quantities are shipped via ISO tank containers and IBC tote tanks.

Storage: This is a Class 3 flammable liquid, UN No. 1274, with a flash point of approximately 15°C (closed cup), classifying it as a Class A highly flammable liquid. It should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated flammable liquids warehouse, with a warehouse temperature not exceeding 30°C, away from ignition sources and heat, with open flames and smoking strictly prohibited. Electrical and ventilation equipment must be explosion-proof, and containers must be grounded to prevent static electricity. It should be stored separately from oxidizers and acids. Containers should be sealed to prevent moisture absorption in order to control moisture content.

Transportation: Must be transported in accordance with Class 3 flammable liquid regulations, with vehicles equipped with flame arrestors and fire-fighting equipment. Loading and unloading should be handled gently with controlled flow rate to prevent static electricity and packaging damage, and the product should be protected from sun exposure during transport.
