Product Introduction
Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether (2-Butoxyethanol, abbreviated as BG or BCS), CAS No. 111-76-2, is a colorless transparent liquid with a mild ether-alcohol odor. Industrially, it is produced by the addition etherification of ethylene oxide and n-butanol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, followed by distillation to separate the mono- and di-adducts. The BG molecule contains both a hydroxyl group and an ether bond, giving it both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties. As a typical amphiphilic coupling solvent, it is mutually soluble with water and most organic solvents, and can significantly improve the film-forming properties and leveling of water-based systems. It is the leading solvent in the waterborne coatings, cleaning agents, and printing ink industries.

Product Applications
- Waterborne Coatings: Used as a coalescing agent and coupling solvent to improve the leveling and can stability of waterborne latex paints and industrial coatings.
- Cleaning Agents: Serves as an active solvent in industrial cleaners, grease removers, and household detergents, with outstanding degreasing performance.
- Inks and Dyeing: Used in water-based inks, dyeing auxiliaries, and textile leveling agents.
- Metalworking Fluids: Employed as a compounding agent in cutting fluids, anti-rust fluids, and brake fluids.
- Organic Synthesis: Used in the production of ethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate (BAC) and surfactants.
Packaging, Storage, and Transport
- Packaging: Conventional 180 kg or 200 L galvanized iron drums; bulk quantities are shipped in 1000 L IBC totes, ISO tanks, and tank trucks.
- Storage: Classified as a Class 6 toxic substance (some standards classify it as a flammable liquid), UN No. 2369, flash point approx. 60°C. Must be stored in a cool, well-ventilated hazardous goods warehouse with temperatures not exceeding 35°C, away from ignition sources and heat. Keep separate from oxidizers, strong acids, and strong alkalis. Containers must be tightly sealed and protected from moisture to prevent negative effects on moisture content and color indices.
- Transport: Must be transported in compliance with dangerous goods regulations; vehicles must display appropriate warning signs and be equipped with fire-fighting equipment. Handle with care during loading and unloading to prevent package damage. This product can be absorbed through the skin; operators must wear chemical-resistant gloves and protective goggles, and maintain ventilation at the worksite.
