Product Introduction

Acrylic Acid, CAS No. 79-10-7, is a colorless and transparent liquid with a strong pungent, acidic odor, and is capable of slow self-polymerization at room temperature. It is industrially produced from propylene as the raw material through a two-step gas-phase catalytic oxidation process (propylene → acrolein → acrylic acid), with the product divided into two grades: crude acid (used for producing superabsorbent resins) and refined acid (used for producing esters). The acrylic acid molecule contains a reactive double bond and a carboxyl group, giving it extremely high polymerization and esterification activity, making it a core monomer for acrylate esters, superabsorbent polymers (SAP), water treatment agents, and coating emulsions. The product must have methoxyphenol (MEHQ) added as a polymerization inhibitor and be stored at a controlled temperature of 14–25°C to prevent runaway exothermic self-polymerization.

Product Applications

  1. Acrylate Esters: Esterified with methanol, butanol, and octanol to produce methyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, and isooctyl acrylate, the primary monomers for coating and adhesive emulsions;
  2. Superabsorbent Polymers: Neutralized and polymerized to produce SAP, used in diapers, sanitary napkins, and agricultural/forestry water-retention agents;
  3. Coatings and Paints: Used to produce water-based acrylic emulsions, architectural coatings, and pressure-sensitive adhesives;
  4. Water Treatment and Additives: Used to produce polyacrylic acid and its sodium salt scale/dispersant agents, flocculants, and detergent additives;
  5. Adhesives and Textiles: Used in acrylic adhesives, textile sizing agents, and leather treatment agents.

Packaging, Storage & Transportation

Packaging: Standard packaging in 200L internally lined iron drums or stainless steel drums, with a net weight of approximately 210kg/drum; for large volumes, shipped in bulk via stainless steel ISO tank containers or tank trucks, all containing MEHQ polymerization inhibitor.

Storage: Classified as a Class 8 corrosive substance (also possessing Class 3 flammability), UN No. 2218, with a flash point of approximately 50°C. Storage temperature must be strictly controlled between 14–25°C: below 13°C (freezing point) the product will crystallize out, and the inhibitor distribution becomes uneven upon thawing; above 30°C, the risk of self-polymerization rises significantly. Storage tanks must be equipped with temperature monitoring, nitrogen blanketing, and emergency pressure relief devices. The inhibitor requires an effective level of dissolved oxygen to function (do not completely exclude oxygen, as MEHQ requires trace oxygen to inhibit polymerization). Strictly avoid contact with oxidizing agents, peroxides, strong alkalis, and amines. Containers must be made of 304/316 stainless steel or a dedicated lining material; ordinary carbon steel and copper are prohibited.

Transportation: Transported in accordance with Class 8 corrosive substance regulations, with temperature control measures strictly implemented; insulated or refrigerated vehicles must be used in summer, and freeze protection must be ensured in winter. During loading and unloading, personnel must wear chemical protective suits, acid/alkali-resistant gloves, and full face shields, with an ample supply of clean water and eyewash stations available on site.
