Product Introduction

Methacrylic Acid (abbreviated as MAA), CAS No. 79-41-4, is a colorless transparent liquid or crystalline solid (melting point approximately 15°C), with a pungent, acidic odor. Industrially, it shares the same origin as MMA, produced via the Acetone Cyanohydrin process (hydrocyanic acid, acetone) or the C4 process (isobutylene, tert-butanol) through oxidation and hydrolysis. The α-methyl group in the MAA molecule gives its polymers a higher glass transition temperature, hardness, and hydrolysis resistance compared to acrylic acid, making it irreplaceable in specialty esters, water treatment agents, ion exchange resins, and electronic chemicals. The product also requires the addition of a polymerization inhibitor and temperature-controlled storage; since its melting point is close to room temperature, precautions against crystallization must be taken in winter.

Product Applications

  1. Specialty Methacrylate Esters: Used to produce functional monomers such as hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA);
  2. Water Treatment Agents: Used to produce polymethacrylic acid-based scale/dispersant agents and chelating agents;
  3. Ion Exchange Resins: Used as a functional monomer for weakly acidic cation exchange resins and adsorption resins;
  4. Coatings and Adhesives: Used as a carboxyl functional monomer to improve emulsion adhesion, pigment dispersibility, and water resistance;
  5. Electronic and Medical Materials: Used in the synthesis of photoresist resins, dental materials, and contact lens materials.

Packaging, Storage & Transportation

Packaging: Standard packaging in 200L internally lined iron drums or stainless steel drums; for large volumes, shipped in bulk via stainless steel ISO tank containers, all containing polymerization inhibitor.

Storage: Classified as a Class 8 corrosive substance, UN No. 2531, with a flash point of approximately 77°C. Storage temperature is recommended to be controlled between 16–30°C: this product has a melting point of approximately 15°C, and low temperatures will cause it to crystallize and solidify. When thawing, the entire container must be warmed slowly and uniformly (localized heating must not be used), to avoid uneven distribution of the inhibitor which could trigger localized polymerization; high temperatures increase the risk of self-polymerization. Storage tanks must be equipped with nitrogen blanketing, temperature control, and pressure relief devices, and must retain trace oxygen to maintain inhibitor effectiveness. Must be stored separately from oxidizing agents, peroxides, strong alkalis, and amines. Containers should be made of stainless steel or a dedicated lining material.

Transportation: Transported in accordance with Class 8 corrosive substance regulations, with temperature control measures strictly implemented; anti-crystallization measures must be taken for transport in northern regions during winter, and shading/cooling measures must be taken in summer. During loading and unloading, personnel must wear chemical protective suits, acid/alkali-resistant gloves, and full face shields.
