Product Introduction

Formic Acid (Methanoic Acid), CAS No. 64-18-6, is a colorless and transparent liquid with an extremely pungent, acidic odor and corrosive properties. Industrially, it is mainly produced via the hydrolysis of methyl formate (carbon monoxide and methanol undergo carbonylation, followed by hydrolysis); a sodium formate route (double decomposition of sodium formate with sulfuric acid) is also available. Formic acid is the simplest carboxylic acid, possessing both strong acidity and reducing properties, with acidity far exceeding that of acetic acid. Its decomposition products are only water and carbon monoxide, leaving no organic residue, giving it unique advantages in leather tanning, rubber coagulation, and acid pickling applications. We can supply multiple concentration grades — 85%, 90%, 94%, and 99% — covering requirements across leather, pharmaceutical, pesticide, rubber, and various chemical industries.

Product Applications

  1. Leather Industry: Used as a tanning agent, deliming agent, and neutralizing agent, serving as a key acidic auxiliary in the leather tanning industry;
  2. Rubber Industry: Used as a coagulant for natural rubber latex, offering fast coagulation without introducing metal ions;
  3. Pharmaceutical Industry: Used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates such as caffeine and metamizole (Analgin);
  4. Pesticide Industry: Used in the synthesis of active ingredients for fungicides such as triadimefon and triadimenol;
  5. Chemical Products: Used to produce a series of formate salts including calcium formate, sodium formate, ammonium formate, and potassium formate, for use as early-strength agents in building materials, drilling fluid additives, and feed acidifiers;
  6. Others: Used in textile dyeing/color fixing, metal pickling and rust removal, and silage preservation.

Packaging, Storage & Transportation

Packaging: Standard packaging in 200L or 250kg plastic drums (HDPE); for large volumes, shipped in bulk via 1000L IBC totes, plastic-lined ISO tank containers, or tank trucks.

Storage: Classified as a Class 8 corrosive substance (also possessing Class 3 flammability), UN No. 1779. Must be stored in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse dedicated to corrosive substances, with warehouse temperature not exceeding 30°C, away from fire sources and heat. The 99% high-concentration product has a freezing point of approximately 8°C, so freeze protection is required in winter. Containers must have allowance for expansion space and be equipped with pressure relief measures — formic acid slowly decomposes to release carbon monoxide, which may cause pressure buildup in sealed containers. Must be strictly stored separately from alkalis, oxidizing agents, reactive metal powders, and cyanides. Containers must be made of HDPE, 304/316 stainless steel, or plastic-lined equipment; ordinary carbon steel, copper, aluminum, and lead are prohibited.

Transportation: Transported in accordance with Class 8 corrosive substance regulations; vehicles must display corrosive substance placards and be equipped with firefighting and emergency equipment. During loading and unloading, personnel must wear chemical protective suits, acid-resistant gloves, and full face shields, with an ample supply of clean water, eyewash stations, and dilute alkaline neutralizing solution available on site.
