n-Butanol (1-Butanol), CAS No. 71-36-3, is a colorless and transparent liquid with a distinctive alcoholic odor, partially soluble in water. Industrially, it is produced via the propylene hydroformylation (oxo synthesis) process at butanol/octanol facilities: propylene, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen react under cobalt or rhodium catalysis to form n-butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde, which are then respectively hydrogenated to produce n-butanol and isobutanol. n-Butanol is the most important C4 alcohol, combining good solvency with a moderate evaporation rate, making it the standard true solvent for the coatings industry. It is also widely used as a raw material for producing butyl acrylate, butyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and ethylene glycol butyl ether, giving it a long, robust industrial value chain and consistently strong demand.

Product Applications

  1. Ester Raw Material: Used to produce butyl acrylate, butyl acetate, and DBP plasticizer, serving as the core upstream feedstock for the butyl ester product series;
  2. Ethylene Glycol Butyl Ether Raw Material: Reacted with ethylene oxide to produce ether solvents such as BG and DB;
  3. Coating Solvent: Used as a true solvent and anti-blushing agent for amino resin coatings and nitrocellulose lacquers, improving leveling and film fullness;

Packaging, Storage & Transportation

Packaging: Standard packaging in 200L galvanized iron drums, with a net weight of approximately 160kg/drum; for large volumes, shipped in bulk via ISO tank containers, tank trucks, or IBC totes.

Storage: Classified as a Class 3 flammable liquid, UN No. 1120, with a flash point of approximately 35°C. Store in a cool, well-ventilated warehouse for flammable liquids, with warehouse temperature not exceeding 30°C, away from fire sources and heat, and strictly no open flames or smoking. Electrical and ventilation equipment must be explosion-proof, and containers and piping must be grounded to prevent static electricity. Must be stored separately from oxidizing agents and acids. Containers must remain sealed to prevent moisture absorption, in order to control water content specifications.

Transportation: Transported in accordance with Class 3 flammable liquid regulations; vehicles must be equipped with flame arresters and firefighting equipment. Handle gently during loading and unloading and control flow rate to prevent static electricity buildup; protect against sun exposure and rain during transit.
