Product Introduction

Toluene Diisocyanate (abbreviated as TDI), CAS No. 26471-62-5, is a colorless to light yellow transparent liquid with a strong, pungent odor. The mainstream industrial grade is TDI-80/20 (2,4-isomer to 2,6-isomer ratio of 80:20), produced from toluene via nitration and hydrogenation to form toluene diamine, followed by phosgenation. TDI is the most widely used isocyanate in the polyurethane flexible foam sector, offering high reactivity with polyether polyol and a well-established foaming process, making it the standard raw material for furniture cushioning, mattresses, and automotive seats; it is also an important raw material for PU coatings, adhesives, and elastomers. This product has significant toxicity and irritancy and reacts readily with water, so storage and transport require strict control of moisture and temperature.

Product Applications

  1. Polyurethane Flexible Foam: Reacted with polyether polyol to produce furniture cushioning, mattresses, sofas, automotive seats, and packaging foam;
  2. Polyurethane Coatings: Used to produce TDI trimer and adduct curing agents, for wood coatings, leather finishing, and industrial paints;
  3. Adhesives: Used in polyurethane adhesives, laminating adhesives, and footwear adhesives;
  4. Elastomers and Cast Parts: Used to produce PU elastomers, solid tires, rollers, and screen plates;
  5. Others: Used in synthetic leather slurry, sealants, and modified asphalt.

Packaging, Storage & Transportation

Packaging: Standard packaging in 250kg galvanized iron drums (nitrogen-blanketed); for large volumes, shipped in bulk via ISO tank containers or tank trucks; a 20GP container can accommodate 80 drums.

Storage: Classified as a Class 6 toxic substance, UN No. 2078. Must be stored in a cool, well-ventilated, light-protected warehouse dedicated to hazardous materials, with a recommended storage temperature of 15~30°C: below 15°C, TDI readily crystallizes and solidifies (freezing point approximately 14~21°C), while above 30°C, dimerization accelerates, forming insoluble precipitate. Containers must be strictly sealed and nitrogen-blanketed — TDI reacts violently with water to form polyurea and release carbon dioxide, which may cause drum bulging or even rupture. Must be strictly stored separately from water, alcohols, amines, alkalis, and oxidizing agents — never store together. If the product crystallizes, the entire drum must be slowly heated at 40~50°C and thoroughly mixed before use.

Transportation: Transported in accordance with Class 6 toxic substance regulations; vehicles must hold hazardous materials qualifications and be equipped with emergency response equipment. Strictly avoid impact, inversion, and rain exposure during loading and unloading. Forced ventilation is mandatory at the work site, and personnel must wear positive-pressure or filter-type respirators, chemical protective suits, and penetration-resistant gloves — TDI vapor is strongly irritating to the respiratory tract and can cause sensitization. Ammonia solution or a dedicated neutralizing agent must be available on site for spill response.
