Product Introduction
Dibutyl Phthalate (abbreviated DBP), CAS No. 84-74-2, is a colorless to light yellow transparent oily liquid with a slight aromatic odor. Industrially, it is produced by the esterification of phthalic anhydride with n-butanol. Compared to DOP, DBP has a smaller molecular weight, lower viscosity, faster plasticizing speed, and stronger dissolving and penetrating power for resins, making it commonly used as an auxiliary plasticizer or fast-plasticizing agent, particularly suitable for PVC paste resins, nitrocellulose lacquers, and adhesive systems. However, its volatility and migration rate are higher than DOP, and its durability is somewhat lower. DBP is also a restricted phthalate-class plasticizer that has been included on the REACH Authorisation List, and its use in food contact, cosmetics, and toys is strictly prohibited or restricted.

Product Applications
- PVC auxiliary plasticizer: Used together with DOP in PVC paste resins, soft products, and plastisols to accelerate plasticizing and reduce processing viscosity;
- Nitrocellulose lacquers and coatings: Used as a plasticizing and film-forming aid in nitrocellulose coatings, nail polish, and inks;
- Adhesives and sealants: Improves the flexibility and initial tack of adhesive layers;
- Rubber and cellulose plastics: Used as a softener for nitrile rubber and as a plasticizer for cellulose plastics;
- Other applications: Used as a carrier for dye dispersants, textile lubricants, and certain pesticide adjuvants (must comply with regulatory requirements).
Packaging, Storage, and Transportation
Packaging: Standard packaging in 200kg steel or plastic drums; for large volumes, shipped in 1000L IBC totes and ISO tank containers.
Storage: Classified as a Class 9 miscellaneous dangerous substance, UN No. 3082 (hazardous to the aquatic environment). Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from ignition sources, heat, and strong oxidizers, and avoid direct sunlight exposure. Containers must be well-sealed, and storage areas should be equipped with bunds/containment facilities to prevent leaked material from entering drainage systems or water bodies.
Transportation: Transport in accordance with Class 9 dangerous goods regulations, and environmentally hazardous substance markings must be affixed. During loading and unloading, protect against rain exposure, packaging damage, and leakage. Note: DBP is a REACH Authorisation List substance and a phthalate substance under strict regulatory control in many countries — before export, verify compliance with the destination country’s regulatory limits. It is strictly prohibited for use in food contact materials, cosmetics, and children’s toys; for such applications, please use non-phthalate alternatives such as DOTP or DINCH instead.
