Product Introduction
Maleic Anhydride (also known as cis-butenedioic anhydride), CAS No. 108-31-6, is a white flake, block, or spherical solid (melting point approx. 52.8°C, also available in liquid form via tank truck), with a strong irritating odor. Industrially, the mainstream production method is n-butane oxidation, with benzene oxidation and C4 fraction oxidation also used. The maleic anhydride molecule contains an active double bond and an anhydride group, giving it extremely high reactivity. It is the most important dibasic acid raw material for unsaturated polyester resin (UPR), and also serves as a key upstream feedstock for 1,4-butanediol (BDO), γ-butyrolactone, tetrahydrofuran, fumaric acid, maleic acid, and various copolymer modifiers, giving it an extremely long and deep industrial chain.

Product Applications
- Unsaturated polyester resin: Polycondensed with propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, and phthalic anhydride to produce UPR, used in fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP), artificial stone, buttons, and coatings;
- BDO and tetrahydrofuran: Hydrogenated to produce 1,4-butanediol, γ-butyrolactone, and tetrahydrofuran, further used in PBT, PBAT, and spandex production;
- Fumaric acid and maleic acid: Isomerized to produce fumaric acid (a food acidulant and feed additive) and hydrated to produce maleic acid;
- Copolymerization and graft modification: Used to produce maleic anhydride-grafted polyolefin compatibilizers, SMA copolymers, and water treatment agents (hydrolyzed polymaleic anhydride);
- Other applications: Used to produce pesticides (malathion), paper sizing agents, lubricant additives, and alkyd resin modifiers.
Packaging, Storage, and Transportation
Packaging: Standard packaging in 25kg woven bags with moisture-proof liners (flake/spherical form) or steel drums; for large volumes, 1000kg jumbo bags are available, and liquid product is shipped in bulk via insulated tank trucks (60–70°C).
Storage: Classified as a Class 8 corrosive substance, UN No. 2215. Must be stored in a dry, well-ventilated, cool warehouse, with strict moisture and water protection — maleic anhydride hydrolyzes upon contact with water or moisture to form maleic acid, causing a decrease in crystallization point and content, with the hydrolysis reaction being exothermic. It must be kept strictly separated from water, alkalis, oxidizers, amines, and strong acids, and must never be co-stored with these substances. Warehouse floors must be dry, with goods stored on raised platforms to avoid rainwater and ground moisture. Liquid product storage must be maintained at 60–70°C under nitrogen blanketing; excessively high temperatures will accelerate sublimation and discoloration.
Transportation: Transport in accordance with Class 8 corrosive goods regulations, protected from rain and moisture throughout. During loading and unloading, handle gently to prevent packaging damage and dust dispersion; maleic anhydride dust and vapor are strongly irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, so operators must wear dust/gas masks, protective goggles, and protective gloves, and the work area must be well-ventilated.
