Product Introduction

Phthalic Anhydride, CAS No. 85-44-9, is a white flake or needle-shaped crystalline solid (melting point approx. 131°C, also available in liquid form via tank truck), with a distinctive irritating odor. Industrially, the mainstream production method is vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of o-xylene, with a small amount produced via naphthalene oxidation. Phthalic anhydride is the most important aromatic dibasic acid anhydride: esterification with alcohols yields plasticizers (DOP, DBP, DINP), while polycondensation with polyols yields alkyd resins and unsaturated polyester resins — these three application areas together account for over 90% of its consumption. It is also a key raw material for dyes, pigments (phthalocyanine blue), and pharmaceutical intermediates.

Product Applications

  1. Plasticizers: Esterified with octanol, butanol, and isononanol to produce plasticizers such as DOP, DBP, and DINP, used in PVC flexible products;
  2. Unsaturated polyester resin: Polycondensed with propylene glycol and maleic anhydride to produce UPR, used in fiberglass-reinforced plastics, artificial stone, and gel coats;
  3. Alkyd resins: Polycondensed with pentaerythritol, glycerol, and vegetable oils to produce alkyd resins, used in architectural coatings, industrial coatings, and inks;
  4. Dyes and pigments: Used to synthesize phthalocyanine blue, phthalocyanine green, fluorescent dyes, and anthraquinone dye intermediates;
  5. Other applications: Used to produce phthalimide, saccharin, pharmaceutical intermediates, pesticides, and epoxy resin curing agents.

Packaging, Storage, and Transportation

Packaging: Standard packaging in 25kg woven bags or paper bags with moisture-proof liners; for large volumes, 1000kg jumbo bags are available, and liquid product is shipped in bulk via insulated tank trucks (140–160°C).

Storage: Classified as a Class 8 corrosive substance (UN No. 2214), with a flash point of approx. 152°C (still classified as a combustible solid); store as dedicated corrosive goods. Must be stored in a cool, well-ventilated, dry warehouse dedicated to corrosive goods, with strict moisture and water protection — phthalic anhydride hydrolyzes upon contact with water or moisture to form phthalic acid, causing a decrease in solidification point and content. Must be stored separately from strong alkalis, amines, and oxidizers, and must never be co-stored with these substances. Warehouse floors must be dry, with goods stored on raised platforms. Liquid product storage must be maintained at 140–160°C under nitrogen blanketing to prevent sublimation and oxidative discoloration.

Transportation: Transport in accordance with Class 8 corrosive goods (UN2214) regulations; high-temperature liquid product must use dedicated insulated tank trucks with corrosive substance markings affixed. Protect against rain exposure and moisture throughout transport, and handle gently during loading and unloading to prevent packaging damage and dust dispersion. Phthalic anhydride dust and sublimation vapor are notably irritating and corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract; operators must wear dust masks, protective goggles, and chemical-resistant gloves, and the work area must be well-ventilated.
